Dancers from teens to seniors are donning zoot suits and swingy skirts and enjoying the resurgence of big-band swing. You'll be ready to bounce to the beat after getting instruction on beginning six-count swing, the Charleston, and the lindy hop from this lively video. Instructors Evin Jacobson and Noel Galang start at the most basic level, accessible even if you're a beginner with multiple left feet. They clap out the rhythm, show basic footwork, demonstrate the leader's and follower's parts separately, and gradually develop the dance with a couple of turns and variations--nothing complicated. The instructors are easy to understand and follow, and the camera is at the right place at the right time. Many technique tips help you develop the "swing style."
After each lesson, you get a practice session to music. A fashion segment shows appropriate clothing for a night of swing dancing (with tips like wearing a bowling shirt under your zoot suit to minimize dry-cleaning bills). You'll also enjoy live concert footage of "Zoot Suit Riot" performed by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. Even if you don't get through all the instruction your first time, be sure to view the segment towards the end in which experienced swing dancers show off their best moves.
