Review & Description

Bobby Jones starred in a series of golf instructional lessons and theatrical skits in 1931 and 1932, and Sybervision has rearranged footage from those black-and-white films to create four videos. In How I Play Golf: Short Game, Jones gives instruction while conversing with amateur golfers of all ages and skill levels, allowing the viewers to feel as if they are dropping in on an informal master class. This format is more interesting than the usual golf video in which the instructor addresses the camera directly. The strength and beauty of Jones's lessons lie in the simplicity of his descriptions and his intense focus on the basic fundamentals of each shot. This video covers key elements of the short game, including short irons, bunker play, chipping and pitching, and putting. His discussions of chipping and pitching and bunker play are particularly in-depth and insightful, and it's hard to argue with the results as Jones places shot after shot around the cup.

This particular video doesn't contain Sybervision's usual shots of the golf swing against a black background, but it still contains plenty of instructional swing footage. The advice is the same as that given many years later. The only anachronisms are the names given to different clubs, and even then, it's difficult not to be charmed when Jones refers to the seven-iron as the "mashie-niblick." This video is a good tape to watch after How to Break 90, though it also stands alone. --Eugene Wei Read more
